Fatherhood

Fatherhood is an incredible and life-changing experience. It is a journey full of ups and downs, joys and challenges, and most importantly, a great sense of responsibility.

My particular journey began in February of last year (2022). I often find that as I reflect on a particular journey, I more or less, stumble across little nuggets of wisdom that were guided by my faith and what I’ve experienced with “boots on the ground”. I’m hoping that by sharing a little from my 11 month journey, that we’ll take a quick look at this wonderful responsibility of fatherhood together and find that it’s one of the greatest and most fulfilling endeavors we can take on.

So I have to start with how being a father is an opportunity to have SO MUCH fun and make memories with your children. It’s a chance to be silly and let your inner child come out to play. Have I seen every Bluey episode several time? Why yes, yes I have. It’s also a time to naturally segue into a role model and teach your kids valuable lessons about life – to guide them. They are ALWAYS watching and listening.

As I prepared for the arrival of our daughter I did begin to realize that fatherhood is a serious responsibility. It’s not just about providing for your family financially, but also spiritually, emotionally and mentally. As a father, you have the opportunity to shape the lives of your children and help them become responsible, compassionate, and successful adults that love life and love others.

The sweetest moments are when we get to rock our daughter to bed and pray over her – often times, she is looking back at us with a soft gaze we don’t see anywhere else in the day. She is quite literally staring into our souls.

This is no easy task, but it is one that is worth taking. The rewards of fatherhood far outweigh the challenges – oh how often we stay up late worrying about a sickness or bump on the head when they first start crawling. When you see your children happy and thriving, it’s a feeling unlike any other.

So to all the fathers out there (and of course mothers!), embrace your role with open arms. It may not be easy, but it will be one of the most rewarding experiences of your life. And remember, it’s okay to make mistakes – we all do. Be there for your kids and be the best father you can be.
